I think people tend to overlook the selflessness in Hawkeye’s decision to help Ling at this precise moment — because she made a huge sacrifice by electing not to abandon Lan Fan.
Riza is undeniably one of the most cautious members of Team Mustang – she’s extremely careful about every one of her actions and the impact it will have on her comrades. When they’re out on undercover missions, she’s the one to remind Roy that it’s important to do just that: stay under cover.
Because she knows that even one slip up could cost them their ranks – or ever their lives considering that homunculi are now loose around the city.She takes the precaution of gearing up (Wonder Woman style – change hair + glasses and voila – no one’s the wiser!) so that the MPs won’t be able to tell who she is.
It’s important that absolutely no one recognizes her, and that she get to that safe house outside of town as quickly as possible. Time is of the essence, and she knows very well that stopping, turning around – slowing down for anything could be extremely dangerous.
And the Colonel is counting on her to carry out her task successfully.She could have turned her back on Lan Fan – left her to her own fate (for all she knew, the girl was dead already). But Riza understands what it’s like to be in that position – she’s been that guy before – and in Team Mustang, you learn that no one gets left behind.
So yes, it’s a huge risk for Riza to take – but maybe Lan Fan just needs someone to pick her back up (the same way she needed it in the third lab – the same way Havoc needed it when he was down).The second the touches the gearshift, she’s made the conscious, active decision to risk her safety – the safety of her team – to save one girl.
Unfortunately for her, the Ultimate Eye doesn’t miss anything (and how could she have known that such a powerful, almost ubiquitous enemy was lurking about at the time?).
Once Bradley sees and recognizes her on the battlefield (with Gluttony in the back of her car no less) – that’s it. It’s game over. And maybe it wouldn’t have been if she hadn’t touched the stick shift, if she had chosen to refuse Ling.As dangerously smart and manipulative Bradley is though, he lets her get away with momentary victory as he plots true punishment – the separation of their entire team (something that monopolizes and cripples their movements thereafter until the Promised Day).
Because who knows – maybe, just maybe – Team Mustang could have had the upper hand for a fraction of a second had Bradley not seen Riza. Maybe they wouldn’t have been separated – trapped at the homunculi’s mercy – so soon.But Riza understood those risks – she understood them, accepted them, and still chose to help a complete stranger (who, like I said, could have been beyond saving, or even on the other side of town). She risked everything, and would feel the consequences of it just a day later – and yet without that selflessness, Lan Fan never would have made it out of there alive.
